Arc Raiders Expedition Skill Point Changes Analysis: Catch Up Mechanism | IGGM Analysis

The recent major adjustments to Arc Raiders’ Expedition have sparked widespread discussion within the player community. This update does indeed address Stash becoming a vault.

However, the mandatory short time windows, unclear damage requirements, and the practice of only announcing specific rules at the last moment of each updatehave become the focus of attention for some players.

Rule Changes

Previously, for the two updates, Arc Raiders required players to accumulate Stash and coins value to exchange for five extra Skill Points. The threshold for the first updatewas 5 million, and for the second season, it was adjusted to 3 million.

This meant that players needed to continuously collect and save high-value Arc Raiders Items throughout the eight-week Expedition period to ensure they reached the required total wealth.

This season, the previous system has been completely abolished. Instead, players must log in between April 28th and May 4th and deal damage to other players or Arc members to receive rewards.

The exact amount of damage required has not yet been announced, but it is confirmed that players must remain active within that specific five-day window to receive rewards.

The logic behind this change is that previously, players often locked high-level equipment and Weapons in Stash to reach the required wealth threshold, hesitant to use them. The new rules force players to actively engage in combat, allowing high-value equipment to truly shine.

However, the core purpose of this Arc Raiders change is undeniable. Players no longer need to worry about accumulating 3 million or 5 million ARC Raiders coins for sale, afraid to use good equipment. Instead, they can freely bring top-tier Weapons into battle and enjoy the direct thrill of combat.

This lowers the barrier to entry to some extent and reduces the tedious grinding for coins to reach the required threshold. Therefore, the underlying logic of the change is reasonable; the problem lies not in why it should be changed, but in how it should be changed.

Window Restriction

While the initial intention was good, the fixed five-day window is indeed unfriendly to players with busy schedules or irregular playtime. Even with Last Call feature as a remedy, its effectiveness is limited.

From April 28th to May 4th, these five days are the only opportunity to earn extra Skill Points.

If a player cannot log in to Arc Raiders during this period because of any unforeseen circumstances, they will not receive these five Skill Points, regardless of their efforts during the other seven weeks of the current Season.

Furthermore, the required damage output is unclear. If the damage requirement is high, players must invest a significant amount of playtime to complete the challenge. This increases the difficulty for players who can only squeeze in a small amount of time during the window.

The newly added Last Call feature will prompt players who missed the window to confirm their intention to reset their account. Even if a player forgets to log in or cannot log in, they can still choose to reset their account.

However, choosing to reset the account will not grant the five extra Skill Points. These Skill Points can only be earned through Catch Up Mechanic in Riven Tides, meaning players will have to wait a full eight weeks.

During this time, players who miss out on Skill Points will consistently lag behind those who complete the challenge on time in terms of attributes. While Catch Up Mechanic theoretically provides a remedy, waiting eight weeks is an extremely high time cost.

Waiting eight weeks means that players who miss out on Skill Points will remain behind throughout the entire season, posing a significant challenge to competitive players.

Notification Issues

The final stage of Expedition requirements differs for each updatein Arc Raiders. The first updaterequires accumulating 5 million value, the second 3 million, and the third requires dealing damage within a five-day window.

These changes themselves aren’t the problem – the developers have specified that Expedition process is not yet finalized and new content will be continuously tested – the problem is that players are only informed of the specific requirements in the last few days.

This update was only announced ten days in advance, making it difficult for players to adjust their schedules to accommodate a mandatory five-day window.

This approach prevents players from effectively allocating their time and resources throughout update. Because of the lack of transparency, players are forced to passively await official announcements, often arriving too late to prepare adequately.

As a continuously running game, Arc Raiders’ update-based Expedition system should provide players with a clear roadmap. Players need to know what goals they should strive for from day one. While the current approach gives the development team flexibility, it sacrifices player’s planning ability.

A reasonable compromise is to announce the requirements for all stages, including the final stage challenge, at the start of each update- starting with Riven Tides.

If the developers are concerned that early announcements might cause players to complete the content prematurely and lose interest, they could at least announce the time window and task types in advance, without revealing specific numerical values.

Respecting players’ schedules is a fundamental prerequisite for maintaining a healthy community.

The core contradiction of Arc Raiders Expedition changes lies in the gap between the design intent and the implementation. Players are not against the condition of dealing damage, but against being confined to a very short and unchangeable timeframe.

If the developers could open the final stage challenge to the entire update, allowing players to complete and submit it at any time, and simultaneously announce Roadmap and Riven Tides updates in advance, then most of the dissatisfaction could be resolved.
